Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) Surveys

There is now increasing awareness of the potential impact that a proposed development may have on the surrounding environment. We are finding a larger number of clients requesting survey work to help ascertain flooding potential relating to their site / development, and the surrounding area.

At the planning stage, a Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) may be requested / specified, in accordance with Planning Policy Statement 25 (PPS25). Typically this involves specialist engineers preparing an FRA Study which will consider all potential flooding risks to the site, including those from rivers, drainage systems, and the sea.

An FRA will often require the construction of a hydraulic model of the area in question, to establish flood levels at the site for various return period events, (e.g. the 100-year event), along with a topographic survey of the site to confirm the extent and depth of flooding.
Surveying Watercourse Structure

The report will also investigate the run-off generated by the proposed development, to ascertain if this will increase flood risk to the surrounding area.

In order to do this, level information will be required for the site and associated surrounding areas.

Generally the engineers prepare a survey brief of their specific requirements for a site; which includes topographic & hydrographic survey work, incorporating watercourse cross-sections plus structure details.
